Representation in the United Nations COP27 held in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt Muhammad Shafiq (Assistant Professor, Institute of Botany, University of the Punjab) has honor and privilege of being part of Pakistan Pavilion and Ecological Society (ESA) of America, USA Pavilion at the same time in the United Nations Conference of Parties (COP27) held in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt from Nov 06 until Nov 18, 2022, after earning recommendation and Official Observer Badge from Ecological Society (ESA) of America, USA. In his Official Observer portfolio video shared on United Nations COP27 website, he strongly endorsed Pakistan’s lead charge for climate justice by pressing the case of ‘Loss and Damage’ fund for G77 with a special focus on Pakistan, a country paying enormous cost of climatic catastrophes (recently witnessed in the form of devastating floods of 2022) despite contributing less than 1% of the global GHGs emissions that warm planet earth. For active engagement in the global reduction of biodegradable municipal solid waste-based GHGs, comprising the third largest anthropogenic source of methane emission, acting locally at Pakistan level through compost- and biochar-based indigenous-led climate solutions that are adaptable, equitable, and strong source of circular bioeconomy; Muhammad Shafiq as an applied researcher engrossed in indigenous capacity building for reducing climate change adversities and vulnerabilities. Being a Veteran Awardee of the Global Cleantech Innovation Programme (GCIP) First Runner-up Prize of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in Pakistan, he observed ‘Advancing Cleantech Innovation and Entrepreneurship for Climate Action’, Launch Event of the Global Cleantech Innovation Programme (GCIP) at COP27 that included multiple Knowledge Sessions and Sector Dialogues. After observing Science Day, Adaptation and Agriculture Day, Decarbonization Day, Water Day, Solution Day, Biodiversity Day, Gender Day, Youth and Future Generations Day, Energy Day, Ace and Civil Society Day, and Finance Day of the Climate-Diplomacy at COP27; he posted two blogs on ESA (USA) website related to realm and rationale of UN’s COP27 in addressing poor people centered climate justice for developing countries like Pakistan in the currently turbulent geopolitical and economic inflation arena.
